Sustainable forestry requires efficient production of tree seedlings from limited seed stock. Large proportion of forest seedlings in Europe is grown at bareroot nurseries, which are vulnerable to weather events such as droughts and experienced seed losses of up to 90% in the dry 2018 season. We offer a novel biobased coating, which provides a source of moisture and sustained release nutrition and improves germination up to 40% in water stress conditions. Besides forest nurseries, the technology will improve the efficiency of direct and aerial seeding programmes, which often have sub-10% establishment rates. It will effectively allow to restore a larger area with the same quantity of seed.
